The immigrants who come to our border with Mexico - from Central America and other locations - have needs that WE can meet as a church. A primary need that has been identified is hygiene kits for men, women and children.
North Village Church is working with an organization in Harlingen that is getting supplies to those in need. Most of the hygiene kits will go across the border to a tent city in Matamoros, Mexico. Some kits may go to other shelters in the valley in McAllen and San Benito, Texas, as well as shelters in Reynosa, Mexico.
Items needed for the kits are:
- Clean, new washcloths
- Toothbrushes (mainly adult size, but also children’s toothbrushes)
- Tubes of toothpaste (small tubes are best)
- Band-Aids (only 2-3 band-aids will go in a kit, so we don’t need too many boxes; just get the regular size band-aids)
- Sticks of either men’s or women’s deodorant
- Plastic combs
- Bars of soap
Don’t think that you need to get all these items. Donations of any of these items will be appreciated. Stores such as Dollar Tree have some of the best deals for toothbrushes (4-5 for $1 and they include a plastic holder), band-aids, toothpaste and deodorant. Walmart and Target may also have good prices.
Where to drop your items:
Hygiene kit items can be brought to North Village Church on the following Sundays, from 9:00-10:00 am: Oct. 20th & 27th, Nov. 3rd & 10th. The church meets at Pillow Elementary School, 3025 Crosscreek Dr., Austin 78757, at 10:00 am.
You can also bring your items to the church office from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Tuesday through Thursday Oct. 22 – Nov. 14.
Kits will be assembled at church on Nov. 17 and shipped to the border in mid- to late- November, along with Spanish language Bibles that the church is donating.
