Peace on earth: Merry Christmas!
Isaiah 42:1-2, “1 Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry out or raise His voice, nor make His voice heard in the street.”
In Isaiah 41 the chapter ends with the God of Scripture describing the weak idols of their day like sex, power, comfort, and says, “Their worthless and empty” and in chapter 42, verse 1 we see the contrast of those weak, worthless idols with the word, “Behold.”
It is the God of Scripture clapping His hands to get our attention. These weak, worthless idols are going to fail you every time. They are going to give you an illusion of intimacy, comfort, and security, but “BEHOLD” My Servant will come and My Spirit will be upon Him, and He will establish justice on earth to all the nations.
Have you noticed how everyone is seeking justice for something today? Everyone is protesting something. Everyone is holding up signs. Everyone is getting fired for inappropriate behavior.
But, in Isaiah 421-2 we see that one day a future figure is coming who will bring justice to every layer and crevasse of the world. God’s justice isn’t just equality for one group of people in one part of the world at one point in history, but the God of Scripture is bringing a justice where the whole of creation is going to be reordered to work in accordance to His perfect design.
Therefore, we must read verse 1 and ask the question, “Who is this future figure that is going to bring peace on earth on a global level?” I know you are thinking the answer is Jesus, but just imagine you don’t know the answer. Imagine you are hearing Isaiah 42 for the first time, because look at the description of this future figure. This future figure is described as POWERFUL and HUMBLE.
This future figure is going to come with enough power to bring justice to the world, but he will “never raise His voice.” How is this possible? Today, we think the only way to get someone’s attention is to raise your voice. We hold up signs, we get bullhorns, we march in the streets and chant creative phrases, but this future figure doesn’t do any of those things.
He doesn’t have to host a pep rally to motivate the troops. He doesn’t have to type in all CAPS. He doesn’t even have to roll up His sleeves like, “Alright everybody, get back!”
He is full of humility, and power, and he is unlike any other person we have seen in history, so that the only answer is Jesus. After all, who else has displayed power over wind, water, disease and death with simply His breath?
Remember when Jesus spoke to Lazarus in John 11, “Come forth!” Lazarus’ sisters said, “No, it’s impossible. Lazarus has been in the tomb so long he will smell.” Jesus simply says, “Come forth.”
Who else has displayed the humility of Jesus? Who else has possessed all the power in the world, and when insulted, never retaliates (1 Peter 2:23)? Who else was oppressed and afflicted and led to the slaughter, and yet never opens His mouth (Isaiah 53)?
His name is Jesus!
